Heart & Stroke

  • DESCRIPTION:

    • Heart & Stroke certificate - For providers who give care to patients in both in-facility and pre-hospital settings (eg - doctors, nurses, paramedics, respiratory therapists, naturopaths, etc.) You will learn single and multi-rescuer skills with a focus on high-quality CPR and team dynamics. Current certification is often required for employment in the healthcare field.

    • *Available as both full certification and recertification

    • *BLS is prerequisite for ACLS, PALS, and PEARS.

    COURSE CONTENT:  

    • Chain of Survival

    • 1-rescuer / 2-rescuer CPR

    • High-quality chest compressions with a feedback device

    • Multi-rescuer team CPR

    • Adult, Child, and Infant CPR and relief of choking

    • Use of an AED

    • Effective ventilations using a barrier device and bag-mask device

    • Opioid-associated life-threatening emergencies


    CME/CPD CREDITS AND ACCREDITATION:

    • Heart & Stroke BLS Provider & BLS Provider Renewal Course eligible for two (2) credits per hour under Section 2 of the MOC Programs as "Traineeships".

    DESCRIPTION:

    • Basic one-day course offering lifesaving first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills for the workplace or home.  The "blended" option allows the learner to maximize time by studying the theory portion at home (approximately 4 hours) and then come in for the hands-on practical in class portion (4 hours) which is 8 hours total.

    • WorkSafe Occupational Level 1 Equivalent

    DESCRIPTION:

    • A blended course consists of an online/theory portion which can be completed at home at your own pace as well as the in class portion which consists of hands-on learning. The only requirement is you MUST complete the theory portion before attending the in-class session. This is the perfect for people with busy schedules. Course duration is 16 hours total (8 hours online; and 8 hours in class). The course covers First Aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills for those who need training due to work requirements or who want more knowledge to respond to emergencies.

    DESCRIPTION:

    • Quick and basic CPR skills that anyone can learn with training on how to use the Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

    • CPR/AED LEVEL A (Adults only) OR C (Adults, children, and infants)

    DESCRIPTION:

    • Through the LifeSaving Society, this course covers all CPR skills and theory for either adults (CPR-A) or adults, children, and infants (CPR-C). It includes AED training as well

    COURSE CONTENT:

    • The rescue process

    • Victim assessment - conscious and unresponsive

    • One and two-rescuer CPR with AED training

    • Obstructed airway (choking) for adults, children, and infants

    DESCRIPTION:

    • LifeSaving Society - This course is for people who want a general knowledge of first aid and the emergency treatment of injuries. This course packs a lot of knowledge in to an 8 hour day in the classroom.

    COURSE CONTENT:

    • Victim assessment

    • Choking - for adults, children, and infants

    • External bleeding

    • Recognizing a heart attack and stroke

    • Recognizing shock

    • Asthma and anaphylaxis

    • Must be present for the entire class, and actively involved. Must perform physical skills through scenario work. There is a quiz at the end of the class. Students must obtain a passing mark of at least 19 out of 25

    • Designed for those working in the childcare, home care or residential care industry.  Topics in this course apply to everyone, with a special focus on children and infants.  This course outlines Emergency First Aid, and includes concussions, bone and joint injuries, diabetes, seizures, heat and cold illnesses (heat stroke and hypothermia), and poisons.

    DESCRIPTION:

    • Offers basic first aid and caregiving skills for youth 11-15 years old. 

    • Participants learn how to provide care to children in a variety of age groups, and how to prevent and respond to emergencies.  The course also offers youth the skills to promote themselves as babysitters to prospective families

    PREREQUISITE: 

    • Minimum of 11 years of age (or completion of grade 5)

    COURSE CONTENT:

    • How to be responsible and demonstrate leadership

    • How to make good decisions and manage difficult behaviours

    • Information on children's developmental stages, and specific strategies for each stage

    • How to feed, diaper, dress, and play with children and babies

    • How to recognize and prevent unsafe situations, make safe choices and promote safe behaviours

    Offers basic first aid and safety skills for youth 9-13 years old.  Participants learn about being safe when they are without the direct supervision of a parent, guardian, or trusted adult, both at home and in their communities.

    PREREQUISITES:

    • Responsibility and respect while being accountable for yourself

    • Setting and following safety rules when on your own
